Value-based pricing is the most powerful pricing strategy available to freelancers — but also the most misunderstood. The core idea is simple: price based on what your work is worth to the client, not how long it takes you.
An experienced copywriter who writes a sales page in 4 hours shouldn't charge 4 × $75 = $300 if that page generates $50,000 in sales. The value created is $50,000; charging $5,000 (10%) is both more profitable and more defensible than any hourly calculation.
The key is anchoring the conversation to ROI before discussing price. During your discovery call, find out: what's the business problem, what does solving it mean financially, and what have they tried before? Quantify the opportunity together. When you then present a price, frame it as a percentage of the value created — clients immediately understand the logic.
Value-based pricing requires confidence and track record. Start by applying it to one or two clients where you have clear evidence of ROI. Build case studies. Use those results to justify premium pricing with future clients.

Value-based pricing means setting your fee based on the economic value you create for the client, rather than time spent. If your SEO work generates $200,000 in new revenue, charging $20,000 (10%) is justified by the ROI — regardless of how many hours it took.
Ask during your discovery process: 'What does success look like for you, and what's that worth to your business?' For leads generated, estimate: leads × conversion rate × average deal size. For cost savings, the math is direct. For risk reduction, estimate the cost of the problem you're solving.
5-20% is typical. Higher percentages are justified when: you have strong proof your work delivers the ROI, the client has high certainty about the outcome, or the work is highly leveraged (e.g., code used by thousands of users). Use 5-10% when starting out with value-based pricing.
Make conservative estimates publicly: 'Based on industry benchmarks, I'd expect this campaign to generate around X leads, worth approximately $Y to a business with your conversion rates. Does that sound right?' Most clients will correct you with better numbers.
